We had the pleasure of interviewing Lauren Ruth Ward over Zoom video!
Lauren Ruth Ward is single-handedly revitalizing the image of powerful women in rock’n’roll by unleashing a spree of viral hit singles and headlining a sold-out U.S. concert tour. With the release of “Mindseye” – the seductive, guitar-laced title track of her wildly anticipated EP of the same name – Ward is poised for brilliant new heights.
Of the track, Ward says, “‘Mindseye’ is about being in a relationship and trying to figure out what parts are real and what parts are disillusionment for you and for the other person. It’s a question that is always there, especially since we’re always changing. It can be hard to be honest with yourself and with a person you love because you don’t always know if you’re crazy or sane. It’s the paranoid part of being in love.”
“Mindseye” is the latest salvo in a year that has seen the Baltimore-bred/L.A. based artist go from strength to strength, starting with viral smash “Messiah,” which currently has over 42k streams on Spotify. The bluesy rock anthem is accompanied by a smouldering performance video lensed by filmmaker Wes O’Connor.
Ward has further revealed her enigmatic screen presence in the lush, emotionally charged short film supporting the cathartic single “Suburban Ego.” Teamed with acclaimed indie director Savannah Sivert, Ward reveals the depth and charisma of a movie star.
The singles building to the release of Mindseye have proven to be formidable fuel for Ward’s recent sold-out stateside concert trek that transcended the traditional artist/audience experience. “My shows have always been an interactive experience,” the artist says. “There’s a bond and a trust between us that exists and allows for a high degree of spontaneity.”
In addition to an extensive tour of Europe during the first quarter of 2023, Ward has also recently teamed up with internationally renowned comedian/writer/performer Mae Martin for a beautiful, lo-fi rendition of Elliott Smith’s evergreen “Twilight.” The track, which is available via SoundCloud, was recorded to raise awareness of issues surrounding mental health and suicide prevention.

Lauren Ruth Ward is an artist on a mission. With the songs like the epic new EP, Mindseye, she is establishing herself as a new-generation rock star.
Armed with a voice that is, by turns, soulfully gritty and gently expressive, Ward brings her deeply personal songs to life in live performances that have a bold, otherworldly quality. She charges through guitar-fueled rockers like the viral smash “Messiah” with an explosive ferocity akin to Janis Joplin, while weaving poetic and acoustic confessionals like “Suburban Ego” with the fragile intimacy of a Laurel Canyon-era folk storyteller – all while imbuing each song with a unique and incomparable quality that can only be Lauren Ruth Ward. The secret sauce of her music is an astute understanding of rock music history, and her ability to sculpt it into a fresh and innovative new sound.
“I was raised on the music of legends,” Ward says, citing a childhood spent absorbing the recordings of Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Elliot Smith. “I was deeply moved by their art, and that inspired me to explore my own.”
She grew up in Baltimore and began performing as a hobby when she was 13 years old. After graduating from high school, she began working as a hairstylist. With time, however, it became clear that she needed to make music the focus of her life. It was around that same time that Ward also began to embrace her queerness.
