We had the pleasure of interviewing Giolì & Assia over Zoom video.

Hailing from Palermo, Italy, Giolì & Assia are instrumentalists, singer/songwriters, DJs and label owners, who create beautiful genre-less & hypnotic music, playing every instrument and producing completely on their own, crossing the lines between house, indie, and ambient.

On September 9th they released Fire, Hell and Holy Water via Ultra Records, the band’s biggest body of work to date, a 16 track labor of love recording during challenging times of the pandemic.

The record documents the girls’ turbulent and intense highs and lows as a couple, and the health problems and untimely losses of relatives during the pandemic. Referencing a plethora of major sonic influences the pair cite London Grammar, Coldplay, Depeche Mode, Labyrinth’s Euphoria score, and U2 as just a few of the many formative inspirations on their landmark forthcoming album.

Members of the LGBTQ+ community, Assia discovered Gioli via YouTube, where videos of Gioli playing drums went viral, and they connected over social media. They came together as a duo and began touring In 2018, and have been very open about speaking about how their union as a couple is the foundation upon which they have built their musical duo.
